Mike Johnson fights to retain the speaker's gavel — with help from Donald Trump

House Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to avoid the same fate that his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, experienced two years ago: an embarrassing, drawn-out floor fight for the speaker’s gavel.

A small band of right-wing rabble-rousers is threatening to derail Johnson’s bid Friday to retain the speakership. It typically would be a difficult task to take on an incumbent speaker. But Republicans hold such a paper-thin majority in the new 119th Congress that just two GOP defectors could block Johnson from winning the top job for another two years.

At least 10 shot outside Queens nightclub as multiple gunmen open fire

At least 10 people were shot when three to four gunmen opened fire on a group standing outside a Queens nightclub where a private event was taking place Wednesday night, the New York City Police Department said in a press briefing early Thursday.

All of the victims in the 144th Street shooting outside of the Amazura nightclub in Jamaica — six females, four males — are expected to survive, police said. Authorities are investigating if the shooting is gang-related. They say there is no link to terror.
