As families of the dead deal with loved ones' absences, companies hope they can reopen after the hurricane's floods and officials look for ways to pay for the rebuilding. Gaby Torres thought she’d have returned to work by now at Plastiexports in Erwin, Tennessee, one of several businesses destroyed or damaged when Hurricane Helene’s floodwaters ripped through the town’s industrial park on Sept. 27.
But the new year is fast approaching and there are still months of work expected to dig the business out of mud and debris, and repair or replace equipment there.
The next round of governor's races could bring big changes to state power
A whopping 38 gubernatorial races will be on the ballot from coast to coast over the next two years, contests that will shape a long list of hot-button policy issues and the directions of both political parties following the 2024 presidential election.
These include two races in 2025 — in New Jersey and Virginia — that could offer early hints at how voters are responding to the first year of President-elect Donald Trump’s second term in office.
